Grand Hotel Europe Sets World Record With 130m Caviar Toast

Caviar Toast The world record attempt was carried out in accordance with the rules laid down for a record attempt and certified by Levsha, the Russian Club of Records, and will be submitted to the Guinness Book of Records for inclusion in its 2005 publication.

76 kilos of Red Caviar was prepared on 130 metres of toast by 130 chefs under the direction of executive chef Dominique Ferchaud and served to 600 guests enjoying the spring sunshine at the beginning of the season of White Nights in St Petersburg.

The certificate presented to general manager Thomas Noll says "For the first time both in the history of Russian and World records, the hotel prepared and served 130 metres of toast and red caviar on the day of its 130th anniversary celebrations."

Acquired by Orient-Express Hotels Ltd in February 2005, the Grand Hotel Europe is an historical landmark dating from 1824. The building's magnificent baroque facade was designed by the Italian architect Rossi. The hotel is in the heart of St. Petersburg, across from the Shostakovich Philharmonic, next to the Russian Museum and the Moussorgsky opera and ballet theatre and within walking distance of the Hermitage Museum and the Winter Palace Square. The hotel's 301 rooms include 89 suites, 17 of which have terraces overlooking the Russian Museum in Arts Square. It has seven restaurants and bars that include the art nouveau splendour of L'Europe, serving French and European specialities beneath an original stained glass ceiling.
