The new USA Consul to S. Petersburg, Mary A. Kruger, paid a visit to the Great Choral Synagogue. This visit also involved Vera Zakharova, the Consulate Adviser for the Political and Economics Department, and Rafik Mansur, the Consul for Economic Affairs.
The Chief Rabbi of S. Petersburg, Menachem Mendel Pewzner, met with the diplomats, along with Tamaz Sepiashvili, the Deputy Chairman of the S. Petersburg Jewish community and the Head of the Synagogue Restoration Fund. The Jewish leaders greeted the guests on behalf of the entire Jewish community. The new consul demonstrated a great interest in the Jewish life in Russia's northern capital and was quick to note the great and positive changes that are being made in the community's development. The guests were also pleasantly surprised to witness the excellent condition that the Synagogue is now in following its restoration.
