09.08.2005 13:54

Finland A series of events called St. Petersburg Days opened in the city of Turku, Finland, Wednesday.

The opening ceremony on the city's central square was attended by Alexi Randell, the head of the Turku city administration, and Alla Manilova, chairperson of the St. Petersburg committee on the press and contacts with the media.

A fair of folk crafts, souvenirs and objects of art was also opened on the square.

Heidi Saario, a city events coordinator, said about 150 guests from St. Petersburg had arrived for the festivities this year, including city administration officials, cultural figures, scientists, entrepreneurs and members of public organizations.

An international seminar, St. Petersburg's Role in the Baltic Region's Development, will be a central event during St. Petersburg Days. Scheduled for Thursday, the seminar will focus on regional cooperation in the spheres of economics, environment, tourism, and culture, the exchange of experience and scientific information.

Those attending the seminar will sign a cooperation agreement between Turku and St. Petersburg for 2006 to 2007.

A meeting to discuss the Russian "northern capital's" tourism potential is also scheduled in Turku.

The Data City center will host an exhibit of science and technology achievements by St. Petersburg-based companies and organizations. The event is designed to promote Russian-Finnish relations in different economic capacities.

At master classes and seminars, business people will discuss cooperation in the spheres of high technology, logistics, shipbuilding, tourism and establishing industrial parks.

The Russian Consulate will host an exhibit of pictures by St. Petersburg painters.

Turku is St. Petersburg's first sister city. They signed their cooperation agreement 52 years ago. Since that time, similar events have been held every year either in Turku or in St. Petersburg. This year marks the 29th anniversary of the events, which will run through September 11.
