St. Petersburg will host the sixth Universal Fight World Championship on September 15-18 with participants from 46 countries, a spokesman for the event said Monday.
The championship will consist of two stages: an obstacle course and a fight in the ring. Beside the obstacle course, the participants will throw knifes and shoot paintball guns. During the fight, competitors are permitted to kick, punch, and perform painful holds. The universal fight technique includes elements of sambo, judo, jiu jitsu, karate, boxing, and kickboxing.
The organizers of the event say the Universal Fight is the most popular sport among law enforcement bodies since it requires similar experience and skills.
The idea to a start a Universal Fight, which would combine all the necessary skills of Russian hand-to-hand combat and foreign martial arts, emerged in Russia in 1996.
The first Russian Universal Fight Championship was held in 1999 and has occurred regularly since.
The international amateur federation the Universal Fight was formed five years ago. Currently 31 countries have their own national federations of the Universal Fight.
