FIBA: RUS - St Petersburg in last four; Dexia, Koln force Game 3 deciders
03.01.2006 14:25

dynamo_st_petersburg Dynamo St Petersburg completed a two-game sweep of Maroussi on Friday to reach a European Final Four for the second straight season.

The Russian team, which went undefeated en route to last year’s FIBA Europe League crown, won 71-59 triumph on Friday after their 64-53 Game 1 triumph at Maroussi earlier in the week.

Kelly McCarty had 20 points for the winners while Andrey Ivanov and Vladimir Veremeenko eached scored 13.

The hallmark of Fotis Katsikaris’ Dynamo team this year has been tough-as-nails defence.

That was evident as the Russian team held Maroussi to just 35.6% shooting overall from the floor in Game 2, including 34.2% (12 of 35) inside the arc.

"We were really focused on defence," McCarty said to PA Sport. "We knew it was going to be a possession game. We wanted to take them out of their offence and we did that."

Dynamo took a firm grip on the game with a 13-0 run which began at the end of the first half.

Denis Khloponin’s three-pointer with just three seconds left in the second quarter - the forward’s third made shot from behind the arc in the EuroCup this season - sent the home side to the changing room with a 36-30 lead.

When play resumed, Dynamo lowered the boom.

Darryl Middleton made a jump shot and then McCarty struck back-to-back three-pointers for a commanding 44-30 advantage less than two minutes into the third quarter.

An Ivanov basket extended the lead to 46-30 before Jared Homan stopped the bleeding with a jumper for Maroussi.

Maroussi never recovered, however.

RheinEnergie Koln survived a furious fourth-quarter fightback by BC Kyiv in Germany to force a deciding third game in their EuroCup quarter-final tie.

Hugely disappointed with their 87-85 overtime defeat on Tuesday in Ukraine, RheinEnergie meant business from the opening tip. They ended up leading from start to finish and prevailing 69-62 with Michael Hakim Jordan leading the team in scoring with 21 points.

Sasa Obradovic's team looked awesome at times and when Jordan made a lay-up 12 seconds into the fourth quarter to take his points tally to 18 and give RheinEnergie a 61-42 advantage, victory looked secure.

Renato Pasquali's Kyiv went on a 17-1 run over the next five minutes, including back-to-back three-point plays in the middle of the surge by LaMarr Greer and Kresimir Loncar, and trailed just 62-59.

Jordan buried a three-pointer to reclaim a 65-59 lead for RheinEnergie, however, and after a series of turnovers and missed shots by both teams, the German club prevailed.

Dexia Mons-Hainaut forced a deciding Game 3 in their quarter-final tie with Russian team BC Khimki.

Dragan Markovic scored 20 points, 11 in the fourth quarter, as Dexia claimed a 79-73 home triumph.

Khimki's Melvin Booker had 27 points to lead all scorers. It is now winner take all on Wednesday back in Russia with the series tied at one game apiece.
