Should Sochi fail in its bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games it seems that St. Petersburg is waiting in the wings to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
On the eve of the IOC inspection of Sochi 2014 Marca quotes Valentina Matviyenko, governor of St. Petersburg, saying if Sochi hosts the 2014 Winter Games any other bid by Russia would fail. But if Sochi loses the bid the governor said St. Petersburg would launch a bid for the 2016 Summer Games.
Matviyenko added that if St. Petersburg becomes a candidate it would certainly win.
There were reports of a St. Petersburg 2016 bid in 2003 when Moscow was bidding to host the 2012 Summer Games. St. Petersburg’s vice governor said at the time if Moscow was eliminated St. Petersburg would become a candidate for the 2016 Games.
