The St. Petersburg authorities are determined to have all newly built high-rise structures in the city meet the approved height limits. The first victim is the building which houses the exchange and the Finansist residential complex, located on the Vasilievskiy island in the centre of the city. According to the planning documentation the building was permitted a maximum height of 60 m, whereas its actual height exceeds this by ten metres. The Governor of St. Petersburg, Valentina Matvienko, promised to do her best to make the building’s owners reduce the structure. The same fate awaits anyone else who contravenes planning documentation. At the same time, the issue of the tallest building to appear in the city – the 400-m Okhta Centre skyscraper – is, surprisingly, being avoided.
