Zenit St. Petersburg beat Spartak Moscow 3-1 on Saturday, taking fifth place in the Russian Premier League with 48 points, and winning a chance to play in the 2009/2010 Europe League.
Pavel Pogrebnyak scored the first goal on the fifth minute of the match, held at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium. Referee Igor Yegorov paused the game for a few minutes as Zenit fans celebrated the win with smoke flares.
Danny Miguel, the Portuguese midfielder, scored the second goal minutes after the match resumed, and pushed the score to 3-0 before the end of the first half.
Alexander Pavlenko scored Zenit's first and final goal in the second half. As a result, the Moscow club finished eighth with 44 points.
Moscow police detained over 170 people, including Zenit fans, after the match, a local police spokesman said.
