FIFA Delegation To Visit St Pete, Possible Host Of 2018 World Cup

FIFA Delegation To Visit St Pete, Possible Host Of 2018 World Cup Members of the world's governing body for soccer, FIFA, will visit St Petersburg in the middle of August to study the city's opportunities for hosting matches of the FIFA 2018 World Cup, a spokesman for the St Petersburg city government told Russia's Itar-Tass news agency.

The official noted that the project on the construction of a new soccer stadium in St Petersburg was changed to host the FIFA World Cup.

The stadium is being built on the Kresotvsky Island under the project of Japan's architect Kisho Kurokawa.

The FIFA delegation is expected to visit the construction site.

The project was launched in 2006, but the date of completion was repeatedly postponed. In late 2009 it was decided to adjust the stadium's design to meet FIFA standards for hosting the World Cup.

As a result, the stadium capacity was increased by another 5,000 to accommodate 68,000 people, including 640 seats for disabled persons.

The stadium will occupy the area of over 254,000 square meters.
