St. Petersburg tower site to be moved from center

Hulking skyscraper

The governor of Russia's northern city of St. Petersburg says a hulking skyscraper will not be built in the central location that had been earmarked, a small victory for activists who say it will spoil the historic skyline.

Valentina Matvienko did not say Thursday where the proposed 400-meter (1,300-foot) Okhta Center - a headquarters for Russian gas giant Gazprom - would be built.

UNESCO has warned that building the tower could endanger St. Petersburg's status as a world heritage site.
