The presentation of St. Petersburg's request for the right to host matches of the European football championship 2020 took place at the House of Russia in Rio de Janeiro on June 19. "Russian football originated in the late XIX century in St. Petersburg. In 2018, Russia will host the FIFA World Cup, so we had no doubt whether to bid for the right to hold matches of the Euro-2020 or not," Dmitry Schneider, member of the Presidium of the St. Petersburg Football Federation, told the audience. The concept of EURO-2020 in St. Petersburg and the Russian Football Union's bid book were presented at the meeting. Earlier, the UEFA Executive Committee decided to hold the Championship of Europe 2020 in several states across the continent. Saint-Petersburg is the only Russian city that vies for the right to host matches of Euro-2020. The final list of 13 cities will be approved on September 19, 2014.
