The Benois de la Dance award was established by the International Choreography Union in Moscow in 1991. It was first awarded in the Bolshoi Theatre on April 29, 1992. The date was not incidental, being the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, the great reformer of the art, observed internationally as The Day of Dance.
