Mariinsky Theatre's White Nights' Stars Festival to Continue in Finland

Giselle, the Mariinsky Theatre The festival in St. Petersburg over, a number of Mariinsky theatre's performers will leave for the Country of a Thousand Lakes for the tenth opening of the Music Fest in Mikkeli.

The special programme for the Mikkeli Music Fest by Maestro Valery Gergiyev of the Mariinsky theatre dates back to 1993. Maestro Gergiyev has been the chief music master of the fest ever since. Each time, along with performers from his troupe, he brings to Mikkeli such his friends as Yuri Bashmet, Alexander Toradze, Dmitry Khvorostovsky, and Vadim Repin. According to the Maestro, there are two distinct types of music festivals, those attracting by the unceasingly changing complements of groups and performers and those, like the Mikkeli Music Fest, featuring performers who enjoy the invariable and devout love of their audiences, are used to working together, and, therefore, keep traditionally coming to the place year after year.

The Music Fest will be opened by Mozart's Requiem. Performed among other musical works will be the complete stage performance of the composer's Cosi fan Tutti and the concert versions of Tchaikovsky Evgeny Onegin, Puccini's Turandot, etc. The symphonic programme will include Berlioz' Fantasy Symphony and Harold in Italy, Beethoven's violin concerto, Bela Bartok's piano concerto, Sibelius' First Symphony, and Mahler's Symphony No. 29. The musical performance Valery Gergiyev and Friends will be presented on On June 29, the 10th anniversary of the fest.

In the meantime, the third International Summer Academy of Singers headed by Larisa Gergiyeva will be opened in the town of Mikkeli through the whole event. Its work will be musically summerised during the closing concert of the Music Fest.
