On Thursday it became known, that the Smolny cathedral in St. Petersburg for a while will lose one of its "visiting cards" - crosses on domes.
Dismantling for the subsequent restoration works will be carried out without the help of a helicopter. On the top part of a building scaffolding already are established. They will allow to lower crosses with the help of winch.
Now on domes of the Smolny cathedral there are 4 crosses. The fifth, central cross has fallen during hurricane in the summer, 2001. Restorers are going to restore a steel basis of compound crosses, almost decayed under action of corrosion. Then by means of rivets the gilt copper sheets will be fixed, and crosses will get the original appearance.
To the 300-anniversary of St. Petersburg restoration works on a roof and facades of the Smolny cathedral will not be finished. Restoration of the cathedral is held since 2001 and count for long term.
