January 14 on solemn ceremony there will be the minister of culture of the Russian Federation Michael Shvydkoy, the governor of Saint Petersburg Vladimir Jakovlev, the art director of the Mariinsky theatre Valery Gergiev, representatives of 11 Russian and foreign architectural bureaues - participants of competition, and also professional advisers, judges and expert group.

On the competition’s conditions participants should produce a design-project of the second stage of the Mariinsky theatre in the general area about 39 thousand sq. meters with auditorium on 2 thousand spectators and the technical decision of transportation of scenery between old and new buildings of the theatre through the Krukov canal. For customers of the competition the aesthetic aspect is also important: “the bright remembered image which can become the card of the theatre and the symbol of a high vitality of the 300-years city" should be found.
