03 Exhibition in St. Petersburg: display of unique evidence of Storm-333 operation in Kabul in 1979

For the first time, the Russians will have a chance to see the unique things related to the Storm-333 operation in 1979. They will be displayed at the exhibition devoted to the participation of the Federal Security Service and the special task force of the Interior Ministry of Russia in the fight against terrorism. This exhibition opens in Saint Petersburg on the eve of the 85th anniversary of the state security bodies of Russia. The visitors will have a chance to see for the first time the things that concern the Kabul operation Storm-333 which was carried out by the special task force of the Soviet KGB on December 27, 1979, after which the Afghan war began. Other displays include the documents connected with the events of the 1990s in Chechnya. The exhibits include a telephone from the Dar-ul-aman Palace, the residence of Amin in Kabul, knife bayonets and spent cases from an artillery system. All these things have been given by former members of the Zenit special task force who took part in storming the palace. The greater part of the exhibition is devoted to the struggle of counterintelligence agents against Chechen terrorists. Of special interest are the addresses in the form letters which were captured in the course of the counter-terrorist operation in Chechnya. Other documents include the orders given by Shamil Basayev and other ring-leaders of the militants. The visitors to the exhibition will also see the instructions of terrorists which ordered them who of the Russian servicemen must be taken prisoner and who must be shot down, how and what ransom must be demanded and how to treat the Chechens who collaborate with the federal troops and the legal bodies of power in the republic. The exhibition will also reflect another aspect of the activity of the state security bodies. In particular, it acquaints the visitors with the head of the Ninth Department of the KGB of the USSR, Hero of the Soviet Union, Major General Mikhail Dokuchayev, who won the State Prize for the invention and the introduction of special equipment used for guarding the leaders of the state. The exhibition will be opened in the branch of the State Museum of the Political History of Russia and will last till March 2003.
