The names of Gold Mask national festival laureates were revealed during the award ceremony at Mariinsky Theatre on April 14. Alexander Kalyagin won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of the main character in “King Ubu” by Moscow’s Et Cetera Theatre. Tatiana Shchuko as Lika in “Moscow Choir” performed by St. Petersburg’s Maly Drama Theatre, received the Best Actress.
Kama Ginkas won the Best Director for his “Lady with a Dog”, staged in Moscow’s Young Audience’s Theater. “Lady with a Dog” also received the Best Short Drama Production, while “Moscow Choir” won the Best Drama Production.
The Best Artist award went to Yuri Kharikov, who worked on “Mother Courage”, performed by Samara’s SamART theater.
In the Puppet Theatre Competition Svetlana Mikhailova won the Best Actor for her performance in “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” by Arkhangelsk’s Puppet Theatre. Konstantin Melnik received the Best Artist award for his design of “Winter’s Tale” by Pensa’s Puppet House Theatre. The Best Production Award went to “Nevsky Prospect” by St. Petersburg’s Potudan Theater and Darfilm studio. Ruslan Kurdashov, the director, also received a Gold Mask.
“The youngest” performance “Oedipus Tsar” by Theatre on Liteny, was awarded the special prize, as well as “Kashtanka” by Ekaterinburg’s Young Audience’s Theatre.
“Nord-Ost”, directed by Georgi Vasiliev and Alexey Ivashchenko was acknowledged as the best Russian musical. Yuri Mazikhin, who played the main character in the musical, got a Gold Mask for the Best Actor. Teona Dolnikova, main character in Notre-Dame de Paris was awarded the Best Actress.
The Best Ballet award went to Rollan Peti Ballet Evenings, staged in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre. Ilse Liepa received the Best Ballet Actress, while Nikolai Tsiskaridze, also Bolshoi Theatre dancer, won Best Ballet Actor.
“Anticipation” by Chelyabinsk’s Theatre of Modern Dance received the prize for modern choreography. "Sine Loco" by St. Petersburg’s A.X.E became the novation of the year.
The Best Opera award went to Madame Butterfly, performed by Moscow’s Nemirovich – Danchenko and Stanislavsky Music Theater. Opera’s director Lyudmila Naletova and main part singer Olga Guryakova also took home the Gold Masks.
Vladimir Ponkin from Moscow’s Gelikon-opera received the Best Conductor award. The Best Foreign Production went to French director Joseph Nadge.
