Nicolas De Stael retrospective opens in the HermitageExhibition of works by Nicolas De Stael, one of the greatest painters of the XX century, opens today, on May 12, in the State Hermitage as part of the jubilee celebrations.
Claude Blanchemaison, French Ambassador to Russia, Robert Lion, President of the French Association on Cultural Ties at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are expected to attend the opening ceremony, as RIA Novosti reports. Nicolas de Stael retrospective, for the first time displayed in Russia, will be exhibited in the Hermitage till August 17.
The artist was born in St. Petersburg in 1914, in the family of baron de Stael-Golstein, the last commandant of Peter and Paul Fortress. Nicolas graduated with honors from Brussels Royal Academy of Fine Arts, served in the Foreign Legion till 1940, and after that continued studying art in France. He painted still-lives and portraits, and in 1942 turned to abstract art.
His first personal exhibition took place in Paris in 1944. With the course of time his paintings in abstract style became more mature. The artist tragically died in 1955.
