Hermitage receives USD 75,000 to renovate Indian art exhibition

Indian art The State Hermitage Museum and the Indian consulate signed a sponsorship agreement worth USD 75,000. India is giving the Hermitage money to renovate an exhibition of Indian art. At the signing ceremony, Indian Consul Ashok Kumar Sharm said that 'the Hermitage is more than a museum, as it is not just a collection of works of art, but of whole cultures.'

The first rooms containing the renovated exhibition will be opened this year, with the remaining rooms to follow in 2004. The exhibition will cover the period from the 2nd century to the 19th century, with recent acquisitions increasing the size of the early sections.

The Hermitage's Indian collections include around 2,000 works by masters from the 2nd to the 19th centuries. A permanent Indian exhibion was opened at the Hermitage in the late 1950s, with the last major changes being made at the end of the 1970s.
