National Traditional Orchestra of China to Perform at Mariinsky Theatre

The National Traditional Orchestra of China The National Traditional Orchestra of China will perform at the Mariinsky Theatre this evening. According to the theatre's press office, the concert is being held as part of the Chinese Week festival which is dedicated to the 300th anniversary of Saint Petersburg. The concert will include Chinese music as well as an orchestrated version of Sabre Dance by Aram Khachaturian and certain passages from George Bizet's Carmen.

The National Traditional Orchestra was founded in 1960 by composer Li Huanzhi, former chairman of the Chinese Musicians' Association. It is the largest state orchestra in China and includes many of China's best contemporary musicians and opera singers. In order to maintain the national musical tradition, the orchestra often performs the music of modern Chinese composers. The orchestra also performs many famous pieces by European composers. The orchestra has played in the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Egypt, Greece, Russia, the US and many other countries. Starting in 2002 the orchestra now gives New Year concerts at the Chinese national assembly every year.
