Mariinsky Theater: Decorations Not Destroyed in Warehouse Fire
09.08.2003 13:13

ST. PETERSBURG, September 5. The Mariinsky Theater press service has denied reports that all of the theater's decorations were destroyed in a fire which occurred last night in the theater's main warehouse. The fire, which began at approximately 3 a.m., completely destroyed the inside of the four-story brick building. Five firefighters were injured while extinguishing the fire and sent to a local hospital.

The press service told Rosbalt that 'a special commission is working at the site of the fire and will report there findings at approximately 3 p.m. At this time we can say that the pictorial and props workshops burnt down. But decorations for performances were damaged to a much lesser degree and are being repaired.'

The theater's press service also said that Mariinsky Theater Art Director Valery Gergiev did not intend to leave Rotterdam, where he is currently located, as a result of the fire. The eight annual Gergiev festival opens today in Rotterdam with concert for piano No.5 of Russian composer Sergey Prokofiev performed by the Mariinsky Theater orchestra and directed by Gergiev. This year the festival is devoted to the works of Prokofiev and concludes on September 13.
