Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company is coming to the Mariinsky theatre

Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company brings to the Mariinsky theatre "A Mid-Summer-Night's Dream".

From the opening of Milan's Teatro alla Scala, ballet - along with opera -has played an integral role in the theater's history. The greatest dancers of the Romantic era belonged to La Scala company, including Fanny Cerrito, Marie Taglioni and Fanny Elssler, developed huge followings with their celebrated performances of all the great prima ballerina roles. The second half of the 19th century found La Scala losing most of its stars to England and France, as well as the theatres of St. Petersburg and Moscow.

The renaissance of the company started in 1946, when Arturo Toscanini asked Aurelio Milloss (1906-1988) to serve as director of the ballet company, a position he held until 1977. This introduced an exciting period that artistically reinvigorated the company. Milloss introduced his staging of The Miraculous Mandarin in 1942, which featured music by Béla Bartňk. This new era continued with Milloss' memorable La Follia di Orlando (The Madness of Orlando) in 1947. Throughout its history, La Scala has maintained a firm commitment to teaching, introducing such international talents as Ugo Dell'Ara, Mario Pistoni, Carla Fracci, Amedeo Amodio, Liliana Cosi, Luciana Savignano, and Alessandra Ferri.

On the 8th and on the 9th of October Alessandra Ferri will dance in "A Mid-Summer-Night's Dream", the famous ballet of Mendelsson, staged by G. Balanchin.
