EU's walking tour of Saint Petersburg offers a new view of the city

'The Europe Trail,' a European Union project 'The Europe Trail,' a European Union project in honor of this city's 300th birthday, had its gala opening on November 14 in the Peter and Paul Fortress. The 'Trail' is made up of sights and sites in Saint Petersburg linked to Europeans who made significant contributions to the city's history and is a way for interested visitors to trace the unbroken connection of the Northern capital with the countries of Europe.

The 'Trail' features 15 stops in the central area of the city, one for each member-state of the European Union. All are newly marked with signs in Russian and English.

Presiding at the opening were Marko Ricci, Italy's consul general (Italy is current chair of the European Union), and Richard Wright, who heads the European Commission office in Russia, and, for the Russian side, Saint Petersburg Governor Valentina Matvienko. The opening ceremony included a concert of carillon music featuring Jo Haazen, director of the Mechelen (Belgium) Carillon School. After the concert, guests and journalists took a bus tour of the 'Trail.'

Volksvagen is the general sponsor of European Union joint projects in honor of Saint Petersburg's 300th birthday.
