Golden Mask honors city artistsTwo St. Petersburg companies were among those honored at the annual Golden Mask theatrical awards which were given out in Moscow on Tuesday.
Fifteen contestants competed for the single award of best director, which went to Lev Dodin for his Maly Drama Theater production of Anton Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya." It was the third time in seven years that Dodin has been named best director.
Nikolai Gogol's "The Inspector General" at the Alexandrinsky Theater was named best large-form production. It was the first time the historic theater has been a recipient of a Golden Mask. Accepting the award, director Valery Fokin said, "I am very happy for this theater, which has waited many years for this moment."
