The 10 may, Wednesday, the XIV international festival of performing arts "The Stars of the White Nights" opens in Mariinsky theatre. The annual festival derives its name from the short summer season when the sun never sets, and the beauty of these white nights contributes to the festival’s special atmosphere and its world-class programme of concerts, as audiences exit the historic theatre at midnight into daylight to stroll home through the theatrical setting of St Petersburg. The festival presents the company’s most exceptional productions with performances by leading Russian and international artists, and combines famous historical productions along with new premieres and contemporary pieces. The programme of concerts includes about 100 performances and concerts.
Dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich festival will perform all the symphonies of the composer. Spectators will get an unique opportunity to watch his operas and ballets. The programme of "White Nights" also includes concerts, dedicated to 250th Anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The concerts of "The Stars of the White Nights" will be traditionally held not only in Northern Capital, but also in Ivangorod and Vyborg. After the festival the Mariinsky Theatre building will be closed for reconstruction.
