Collection of Princess Maria Tenisheva Exhibited in PetersburgRussian Museum, St. Petersburg, has opened the exhibition Collection of Princess Maria Tenisheva to mark the 110th anniversary of the museum.
As the press-service of St. Petersburg Culture Committee reports, it was the collection of Maria Tenisheva that actually started the Russian Museum funds.
The famous patron of arts and collector, a remarkable figure of Russian culture and art, she was the first to present the newly founded Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III with a considerable part of her collection in 1898; those were finely selected drawings and water-colours by Russian artists of the 19th century. This collection gave rise to one of Russia’s largest graphic collections of Russian artists.
The highlights of the collection are works by artists of the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, namely by Mikhail Vrubel, Valentin Serov, Alexandre Benois, Lev Bakst, Elena Polenova and Nikolai Roerich.
The visitors will also see sculptures and archive documents from Russian Museum funds.
