Aleksei Balabanov’s twelfth picture Morphia based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s autobiographical “Notes of a Young Doctor” goes on general release in Russia today.

The script had been written by the famous actor and director Sergei Bodrov Jr., who tragically died in an accident in the Caucasus Mountains due to a glacier slide in 2002.

“I took up this scenario because it had been written by my friend Serezha Bodrov. We had discussed various projects with him and wanted to do a lot together, but unfortunately we had not had enough time. I decided to continue what he did not have a chance to finish” - the film director said to journalists.

The plotline is a story about a young doctor, 23-year old Doctor Polyakov, who is appointed to serve in a god-forsaken village hospital in late autumn 1917. When trying to rescue his patient’s life he imperils his own. He is saved with an injection of morphia, the strongest narcotic at that time. Yet, Polyakov does not believe that a sensible person, especially a doctor, can get addicted to it.
