Petersburg datsan. To the 100 anniversary of the temple

The exhibition is devoted to the emergence and spiritual life of the Europe's first Buddhist temple - datsan of Gunzechoyney which in a hundred years of the existence became a sign place for Buddhists of Russia and the important cultural centre of multi-religious St. Petersburg.
Datsan of Gunzechoyney (Gunzechoyney - the Source of the sacred doctrine of the Vsesostradayushchy Lord eremite, Tib.) in St. Petersburg it was constructed in 1909-1915 on the project of the student of Institute of civil engineers N. M. Berezovsky and the architect G. V. Baranovsky on a sample of the Tibetan cathedral temple ("tsogchen-dugan"). As the initiator of construction the envoy of the XIII Dalai Lama scientist Buryat a lama Agvan Lobsan Dorzhiyev acted (1853/54-1938). The temple was consecrated on August 10, 1915 (an old style).
In the years of civil war (1919) temple underwent disorder and lost the most part of the relics and cult accessories. In 1922-1937 the temple estate belonged to Tibeto-mongolsky mission in the USSR. In 1938 after mission elimination the building was municipalised, cult objects are transferred to the Museum of history of religion and atheism. In the next years in the building of the temple various organizations were placed.
On July 9, 1990 the building of datsan was transferred by the decision of the executive committee of Lengorsovet to the Leningrad society of Buddhists. From this point the modern history of revival of the Buddhist temple in St. Petersburg began.
More than 230 exhibits from the collections of the leading Petersburg museums and private collections will tell about the Buddhism in Russia and in St. Petersburg and will provide to visitors to vozmozhnosit to plunge into the rich world of Buddhist religious tradition.
